FLOW.

= the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.

If you’re reading this, please get in touch and tell me: Have you experienced flow? Is it something you chase or something that just arrives without rhyme or reason?

What happens when you throw a bunch of creatives together and before you know it, you’re all riding the same wave of a magical, focussed flow experience and you don’t even know where it came from.

Doruk and I are chasers of the flow state. Individually, experiencing it is a privilege, but when it can be experienced as a shared moment in time, it’s something else. Like Lucid Dreaming, I hope this shared flow is something that at first seems uncontrollable, but then when you look into it, turns out to be something that can easily be learnt. I will have to look into this.

I can’t explain what happened for this Editorial, other than that we got a team of absolute masters of their craft together, put some loose plans in place, had zero expectations, stayed in ‘play’ mode and then let something else take over. We were all in a flow state together, eventually looking up and realising the work was done. It rained, it was messy, it was hot, a lot of stuff was being carried around, plus despite my love for black outfits and out of all things I was wearing the whitest, most see-through jumpsuit which in the rain was A LOT of information for all the team to look at as I was bending over to adjust gowns and trains, but what do ya know, no one cared.

Just like you sometimes wait to name your baby until you see it after birth, we waited to process and edit this Editorial before trying to make sense of it all. And more often than not, it’s the tiniest details that pull your heartstrings so tight, you just have to draw attention to them. In this case, with everything that was going on, it was that tiny halved apricot amongst our tablescape at The Black Brisbane that killed me and became the team’s favourite thing. I had a loose vision for what I wanted the table to be, and had brought apricots, plums and other things along. But then Rachel from Society Lane who did our styling halved that little apricot, twisted its seed around to make it more visible and placed it in the perfect spot on our table, which was already overflowing with beauty with Marina Machado on cakes and Haylee from Huckleberry Flowers on blooms.

We all became obsessed with that tiny apricot, hence the title of this oeuvre. The other part {‘olives’} stems from the fact that we shot the first part of this Editorial at Olive View Estate in Boonah. That shade of green in the olive grove is such perfection, I need to find bed linens in that exact colour and once that’s on, I shall never leave my bed and run the world from my olive throne, surrounded by halved apricots, flowers, candles and books.
